The wildlife watching guide

Essential equipment

You do not need specialist kit to begin. Comfortable footwear, suitable clothing and water may be all you need.

If you are going further, take snacks, check the weather, and tell someone where you are going.

Binoculars

Binoculars help you identify distant wildlife and watch without getting closer.

An 8×42 pair is a useful first choice. It gives enough magnification to see markings while remaining fairly easy to hold steady.

After dark

Look for foxes, badgers, bats and owls after dark. Keep your distance and avoid disturbing them with light.

Torches

Keep the beam low, avoid an animal’s eyes, and switch it off when you do not need it. A dim red light is often less intrusive. No artificial light is completely disturbance-free.

Thermal equipment

A thermal monocular or thermal binoculars detect heat, so a fox, deer or badger can show up against cooler vegetation without sweeping a torch.

Entry-level devices usually cost several hundred pounds, and sharper, longer-range models can run well into four figures. They cannot see through solid objects or thick cover, and a glowing shape may still need binoculars — or a look at how it moves — to identify.

A camera

Start with your phone

A phone is enough for insects, plants and animals that let you get close.

Learn how to approach wildlife, read its behaviour and use the light before spending more on equipment.

A binocular phone adapter is an affordable way to photograph more distant wildlife before buying a camera. A bridge camera, with a fixed zoom, is the simplest next step. Capable beginner models usually start around £350–£600.

A camera with interchangeable lenses and a useful wildlife lens more often costs £700–£1,500, especially second-hand. Enthusiast kits can reach several thousand pounds, and professional telephoto setups can pass £10,000.

Useful apps

Apps can help identify and record wildlife. Check unusual identifications before treating them as certain.
