How to spot animals

  1. Slow down

Walk slowly, stop often and listen. Moving too quickly makes wildlife easier to miss.

  2. Search the edges

Scan habitat edges, treetops, fence posts and patches of sunlight. Look for movement, not the outline of a whole animal.

  3. Read the signs

Footprints, feathers, droppings, burrows, feeding remains, nests and trails show what lives somewhere even when nothing is in view.

  4. Go back

Visit the same place in different seasons. A pond may have breeding frogs in spring and dragonflies in summer.

  5. Stay a little longer

Wait quietly for a while. A kingfisher may pass along the river after you stop moving.

Let wildlife come into view

Choose a viewpoint, stay still and watch. A kingfisher may return to a favourite perch once you settle down.
